We all do it, and by do it I mean get caught up in the beauty blogging hypes. We hear the words 'amazing' and 'have to have' and we get that niggling feeling that makes us want to part with our moo-la, well I used to anyway. This is my first disappointing products post, and that is genuinely because I don't really buy anything I haven't sampled and I tend to agree with most things I do buy. But, sadly that's not the case for these hyped up (anti)heroes...
I heard so many good things about the Bourjois Healthy Mix foundation, I read around, I waited until the hype and somewhat settled and then went ahead and purchased. I do not like this AT ALL. I don't find it to have great coverage, it actually left my skin quite rashy and had absolutely no longevity at all melting off my face within a couple of hours. I really wish I had that £10 back.
Next up, we have blogger favourite Benefit's 'They're Real' mascara*...now I really do want to like this and despite it making my disappointing products list I probably will continue to use this every now and then. It does make my lashes look long and does enhance my already quite curled lashes, but the problem is it too melts off like no one's business. Not only that but I find the wand to be abrasive and the product also smudges leaving a not so flattering panda eye look. Oh, and it's a total pain in the backside to remove. Sorry Benefit, I really want to love it but alas I don't.
As for the L'Oreal Anti-redness CC Cream* and MAC's Shy Girl Lipstick, these are probably more disappointing based on my personal dislike of CC Creams and yellow toned nudes. I'm pale and this CC cream is just far too dark for my ghostly hue, plus I really didn't find it helped to reduce my red areas in the slightest. As for Shy Girl, yet again another blogger favourite that doesn't bode well with me. It's sallow tone just does nothing for my complexion and makes me look ill if I'm honest, however on other people it can be a really gorgeous nude so it just goes to show how personable beauty is.
Do you have any disappointing hyped products that you wish you'd never bought?

I tested the L'Oreal CC Cream in Boots & couldn't believe how bright orange my hand looked, I had to test something that I knew was pale just to cover the orange stain :/ xoxo
ReplyDeleteI'm not keen on the mascara or the lipstick either! I found the mascara to irritate my eyes like no other - it was awful. And the lipstick is just completely wrong for my skintone!

I really don't like They're Real either! But I do adore Healthy Mix.
ReplyDeleteFinding any type of BB/CC/TM can be such a pain, and I'm only medium pale, so I have no idea how really pale people survive!
I really wanted to try out that Bourjois foundation, but this has put me off now haha. That's a real shame though as it looked good. I've never been into CC creams, especially after BB creams I just felt as though they seemed a bit pointless/seemed as in companies wanted to cash in on more money whilst the BB hype was around, at least I know to steer clear of this one now!

I love blogposts like this because recently I feel inundated with false positive reviews from bloggers trying to get sponsored/being sponsored. I love when you strip away the hype from products and get to the actual question of: does it work? Thanks for this post, love!

It's good to know I'm not the only one who disliked the They're Real mascara. I wanted to like it so bad!
ReplyDeletei really disliked the they're real mascara!! i wrote up a review on it, and had quite a few people agree with me! i found it way too clumpy and made my lashes look really spider-y. no thanks!
ReplyDeleteI'm still on the fence about They're Real, it's definitely not as good as people say it is, but I don't think it's that bad. I've tried better! x

We don't like the mascara either... BUT we love the bourjois foundation!! Shame it didn't work for you :( x
ReplyDeletewww.AvneeshnKaren.blogspot.com/
I'm sort of "eh" with the mascara. It's okay I guess for night outs because it's ultra black and it goes on thick. Maybe too thick, I have to run my "Clump Crusher" through to comb out the clumps. If i can work with it, it comes out looking almost like false lashes....ALMOST.
ReplyDeleteAnd girl! Aren't most foundations/creams too dark for us light skinned girls? LOL I can only wear Smashbox in 00.

I love honest posts like this! Really good to know your thoughts. I have to disagree on the mascara though- I have this and love it! Although I agree the wand is a bit spiky! Xx
ReplyDeleteI agree about the Benefit mascara. I just can't love it no matter how hard I try x
ReplyDeleteI got a sample of the Benefit mascara and hated it, it's such a shame when a product lets you down! x

I so agree about the Bourjois foundation, the colors are very unnatural and you need a lot of layers for full coverage, it also lasts not much longer than two hours, even if I apply powder (I tried different ones so it's to the powder but really the foundation).. Such a shame, it looked like a very promising product...

I love Benefit but find that their mascaras are always disappointing :( I use They're Real but put another cheaper mascara on over the top as it doesn't give enough volume for me.

I didnt get on with Mac Shy girl either. I had to sell it in a blog sale in the end. I was gutted as it was so hyped up!

I know, FAR too dark - I couldn't blend it out as much as I tried! x
ReplyDeleteIt's a shame because Shy Girl can look great on others, so I wouldn't put people off trying it at all! x
ReplyDeleteI've never tried Shy Girl but it has been on my wish list for a while, a definite swatch in store I think before you make the order. I love the Healthy Mix Serum though, what a shame you didn't :(
ReplyDeleteI agree with you on Benefit, I didn't like it either, not for £18 anyway!

That just shows how relative beauty is and one good review doesn't always mean it's good for you! Being very pale is a pain sometimes! x
ReplyDeleteI mean some people have absolutely loved it so maybe try a sample? It just wasn't right for me and I know some people have suffered the rash too but I have sensitive skin! x
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean, I've never done a disappointing products post before but I still think products I don't agree with should be mentioned! Glad you enjoy :) x
ReplyDeleteI know right! Everyone harped on about it, it just wasn't working for me! x
ReplyDeleteI know, more people have agreed with me than I thought seeing how hyped up it had been before! x
ReplyDeleteNo, it's not completely rubbish! It's just the smudging that really gets to me! x
ReplyDeleteI know, I really wanted to love it but it just was not working for me! x
ReplyDeleteI have quite long lashes so if they get clumpy it's more obvious, so this really wasn't the one for me! :( and I know right! Amen! x
ReplyDeleteI'm glad it works for you Hannah, I still use it but it's just not what I expected it to be! x
ReplyDeleteI know! I'll still use it on the odd occasion but it's definitely not the best mascara out there! x
ReplyDeleteI know, I'm glad I didn't pay for it! x
ReplyDeleteMy thoughts exactly! It just had a yellowish tone that was completely wrong for my skintone and would melt off and leave my skin looking sallow, not attractive! x
ReplyDeleteI don't find volume to be the problem with it, I actually find that one of it's promising points, it's just how easily it slides off! x
ReplyDeleteI'm thinking of selling mine also, it just sits there and doesn't get any love! :( x
ReplyDeleteYeah, I bought it on a whim and it looked better on my hand than on my lips sadly! A lot of people do love Healthy Mix which is why it's such a shame I couldn't get it to work for me! x
ReplyDeleteHealthy Mix Serum is my must-have haha - it's interesting to read what other people think. I guess that's why we're all different though, so we can have these different opinions :) - I must agree with you on Shy Girl. I have the Kate Moss Rimmel Lipstick in 26 which is a similar colour, just a touch darker, and it's so much better - you should swatch it next time you're make-up shopping, and see what you think. :)

this was very useful to know :) Thank s for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI actually really like Benefit's "They're Real!" I don't find it smudges for me at all but I do agree it's an absolute pain to remove!
ReplyDeletex
I do love the Healthy Mix Foundation but I do think it depends on your skin type as to whether it works or not, I'm glad I'm not the only one who doesn't like benefit's they're real, It just didn't work for me the way I wanted it to.
ReplyDeleteI have the Bourjois foundation and I really like it.
ReplyDeleteIt stays in place and looks natural.

Funny, I have really oily lids and They're Real! is one of the only washable mascaras I can wear without smudging. What bothers me about it is that their advertising promises you a "false lash" look. It gives me a really lovely natural fringe, but I don't find it buildable at all.
ReplyDeleteI don't get the hype over Shy Girl - it's a pretty 'meh' colour. I've tried the Benefit mascara too and it made my eyes itch, it also didn't give much of an impact.
ReplyDeleteThat foundation gave me a rash aswell, shame because the finish was quite nice.
ReplyDeleteAllie from alliesbeauty.blogspot.com
The foundation is both loved and hated all around the blogging world, now I absolutely love it for summer and find if set with a decent powder it is fine, however I just cannot wear it because it breaks me out good and proper, alas I cannot buy it anymore. Benefit I am on the fence with, I have only tried it once and didn't find it made much difference to my short, stumpy lashes! Interesting post, because I will always trust whatcha say and all!
ReplyDeletei agree with the they're real mascara! it doesnt hold the curled at all, which im always looking for in a mascara. luckily, it was only a sample :))
ReplyDeletex
I agree with They're Real - I didn't really see much difference between that and cheaper mascaras I've used in the past. It's a bit of a hassle to take off too xo
ReplyDeleteI definitely agree with you on Benefit They're Real, it does not work for me at all, makes my lashes look clumpy and flat no matter how many ways I try to apply it. However, I do love the Healthy Mix Serum, it works really well for me (I actually put up a review on it today, haha) but I guess it depends what you're looking for in a foundation! xx
ReplyDeleteCurls and Swirls Beauty & Lifestyle
I'm completely with you about They're Real and the Healthy Mix foundation! I found the mascara so hard to apply, and because I have naturally long lashes it just looks ridiculous on me. It also hurt my eyes a lot when I was trying (and failing miserably) to get it off.
ReplyDeleteI also found that the Healthy Mix was really hard to apply - it just sits on top of my skin, clings to dry patches, gives very little coverage and the staying power is just awful.
http://elettravelle.blogspot.co.uk/
yes I absolutely agree with you on shy girl! I was pining too long for this lipstick so I finally gave in, and then ended up returning it for a better suiting color. It made me look like a walking corpse. However I do not agree with you on the healthy mix foundation. This is the only "foundation" that I will wear. I typically wear my mac msf natural or skin 79 dream girls bb cream, but when I want to go for a heavier coverage, like in the winter time I only reach for my bourjois.
ReplyDeleteI thought I was the only one that didn't like shy girl too! I'm glad I'm not going crazy!
